Fujiyoshida lies at the base of Mount Fuji (3,776 meters high), and it is built upon old lava flows. It is considered a high elevation city in Japan that forms an urban area of 700m - 900m above sea level. It is cold in winter, the lowest temperature is around -15 degrees. The city is also located between two of the Fuji Five Lakes. We have setup 7 camera traps at the opposite of Mt. Fuji to monitor animals that came to urban area from mountains for finding food. There were several species that were captured by cameras. They were black bear, deer, wild boar, raccoon dog, masked palm civet, badger, fox, Japanese weasel, monkey, cat, bird, etc.

It took 24 hours from Xining city to Lhasa city by train. In the train, there are oxygen supply devices. But we should first ask for a two-sided hole pipe from a conductor so that the oxygen could be making its way to our nouse. I enjoyed the service very much, free of charge. During the trip, several different type animals showed in front of us such as Tibetan antelope, yak, donkey, and rabbit, etc. The second stop was basecamp of Mt. Everest, We did not arrive there on the same day. We departured from Lhasa at 6 am by a jeep, and arrived the Mt.Everest station of CAS around midnight. The second early morning, we departured to basecamp and Rongbuk glaical lake, stay and short survey there the whole daytime. We saw goas that came down from high steep mountain at the elevation of 5200 m, and birds which its name unknown in black body and yellow mouth. From basecamp to Zhangmu, I was enjoying my sleep in the jeep, not because of tiredness, but also lower and lower altitude (less than 2000 m high in Zhuangmu).

It totally took around 25 days for this journey to detect changes of Imja glacial lake from April to May of 2008. We departed from Japan to Thailand , staying Bangkok one night. The second day, we arrived at Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. All instruments had been prepared within 2 days, including 3 boats, 2 field servers, and so on. From the 3rd day in Kathmandu, we went to Lukla, it took about 1.5 hours by a smaller air plane. From Lukla to Imja, we walked about 7 or 8 hours everyday. We reached Imja 5 days later from Lukla.

From beginning of spring to end of autumn, we visited to Tanzawa for research Japanese Black Bear every weekend since 2007. During this period, I met wild boar (from camera monitoring), deer, monkey, serow, and also black bear (we captured 2 black bears). Here, I want to mention special insect: leech. I have experienced once that my left leg was biten by leech, bled a lot. In fact, there was no any sense. Maybe I was concertrating my mind on detecting wild animal in case we would become meal for wild animal.

Tso, which is Tibetan, means lake. Namtso lies beside snow-capped Nyainqentanglha range. Namtso, which altitude is 4720 m and area 1961 sq.km, is the second largest salt lake in China and the highest salt lake in the world with a surface area of larger than 500 sq.km (Note: the highest freshwater lake is Sengli Lake at an altitude of 5386 m and with a surface area of 78 sq.km, while the highest saltwater lake is Meiriqie Lake at an altitude of 5354 m with a surface area of 64 sq.km. Both are located in Tibet region of China). The lake freezes in October and melts in May with producing thunderous sounds. In Tibetan, Namtso means “Heavenly Lake”; it is famous for its high altitude, vast area and beautiful scenery. Namtso was selected as one of the five most beautiful lakes in China by Chinese National Geography magazine. Others are: Qinghai Lake in Qinghai Province, Kanas Lake in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Heaven Pool in Jilin Province, and West Lake in Zhejiang Province. Twice fieldwork have been done here. First one was in 2004 by microbus from Lanzhou. Second was in 2012 from Lhasa by microbus too.
